Margaret Calvert
I decided to look at Margaret Calvert who invented Britain's road signs. This is a great example of communicating something without words as these signs can be understood by people all over the world just from the colours and simple images used. This is known as a pictogram. |

I also decided to do some research on the isotype movement which was developed by Otto Neurath and Gerd Arntz. isotypes were actually developed to convey quantitative information with social consequences. |

I came across David Mccandless' work and thought the way he shows data was very interesting and clever. He turns data into art so I've decided to use some of his work as inspiration for when I begin to start my own work. Hayao Miyazaki
I am a huge fan of Japanese animator, Hayao Miyazaki who is known as the founder and director of Studio Ghibli which has made so many of my favourite movies. One of my favourite things about the movies is the food. It always looks delicious even though its just an animation and I would always want to eat it. I looked at this style and some tutorials in hopes that I can also make the viewer of my recipe want to eat what they see on paper.

After doing my research on artists and making the truffles myself I decided to go to Pinterest and create a board of inspiration swell as look at infographics. The button below will take you to my Pinterest board I created.
Test
Obviously I had to try and make the truffles myself before attempting to communicate the recipe through images. However I have to admit my family and housemates prefer it when I stay away from the kitchen... Below is the recipe I followed while making the truffles and the playlist I listened to while making my truffles.
Exploration
Here are some visuals I have made in my sketchbook. I decided to think of ways I could represent steps without the use of numbers and ways to present what ingredients were used without using words. I then started to use different layouts to see which I liked best for when presenting my final recipe.
I started to think about how I would show measurements for my ingredients. I used a chart and figured out what my ingredients would be in cups, teaspoons and tablespoons. I also looked at some icons I could use to show the measurements. I also looked at some icons which could communicate time.
While making the truffles I made quite a lot of mistakes which Is why I had to remake them multiple times... I wanted to include this in my final recipe so I thought of ways I could show the mistakes. Then I started to think of the yes no diagrams snd thought this would be a goof layout for my final design. I came up with ideas using words so that it would be easier when designing without words.
I also tried to have a go at making some truffles on photoshop. I'm not sure If I will use these in the final design but it was fun building my skills on photoshop.
I decided I wanted to go with a yes no diagram as I want my recipe to be aimed at an audience who can't cook and I feel like it will help them not make mistakes if they see some of the mistakes I have made. So I started to make visuals of how I will present my final recipe using this method.
After coming up with more visuals and playing around with the layout I really liked the idea of making the truffles into cute little characters that help the baking and creation of themselves. I used the truffles I made on photoshop and turned them into cute characters.
Out of all the layouts I really liked the landscape one the most so I picked my top 4 of the visuals and made larger drawings of them in the layout I preferred.
I asked my family and friends which design they liked best and the majority voted for the design on the top right. After deciding to go with that design I started to think of what images could go into the boxes for the diagrams. I want them to be very simple and easy to understand.
Developing
First I started on creating the background and trying to come up with a layout that worked.
However I found the step order quite boring so I decided to start focusing on the steps and made a better step order.
I finally changed the background to a darker colour which I felt made the steps stand out more and I added the paths, crosses and ticks to show the order of the steps and which were right and wrong. At first I had the crosses and ticks in black which was hard to see so I turned them white which made them look a lot more noticeable on the dark background.
I then started to add my truffle characters. I tried to give them personalities but I wanted them to all look quite similar.
Final result
After getting feedback for my recipe I decided to make some changes to my final recipe by adding a different coloured background and adding a texture.
