Brief
Produce a 3D poster for a film you have been given.

Research
Before creating my poster I decided to look at some artists for inspiration on how I can produce something 3D. I wanted to look at more than one method so that I wasn't just stuck with one idea. First I made a Pinterest board to give me ideas and help me find some artists.

I decided to look at Kumi Yamashita as she is a string artist and I thought this would be a fun and creative way to create a 3D image for my poster. Not only did I find her string art interesting I also found her shadow work interesting to include.

Robert Sabuda is one of my favourite artists and is someone who inspired me to take Graphic design so I had to look at his work for this project as pop up books are something I find really interesting and they would work well with this project.

While looking on Pinterest I found an artist who makes movie posters out of clay and I thought this would be a really good idea to experiment with. I also watched a few of her tutorials on YouTube. A link to her page is below.

Another artist I discovered was Ainslie Henderson. I love how he just uses random bits and bobs and creates puppets with them to create characters and then makes animations with them. He also uses clay in his work.

    Yuichi Ikehata
I really liked the idea of using wires to create a 3d sculpture and then I came across the artist Yuichi Ikehata.
    MatchBoxes
After our first tutorial I was recommended to look at some space matchboxes which were 1960s orientated. I had a look on Pinterest and made a Pinterest board with some I found.

I really loved Johnson Tsang's work on Pinterest so I decided to look into his work more as an idea for my final piece.
    Laurence Vallières
I had a look at some cardboard sculptures to see what I could make with cardboard and then came across this artist who makes large sculptures by up cycling cardboard.

I really loved how much detail this artist puts into his work and it gives off a very realistic outcome.

Research on materials
Pop up books
Before choosing what material to use I decided to look at what I can do with the materials first. I began with looking at different types of pop up mechanisms. I found the websites linked below very useful when looking at how to make the different mechanisms. I have also put below some youtube videos I found useful.

After doing some research on different mechanisms I decided to test them out myself. I tried a V-fold mechanism and a stand mechanism. I liked how the fold mechanism ended uo looking when I took a photo of it from the side as it reminded me a bit of the shape of a rocket.
Clay
Clay was another material I decided to do some research on as I have never worked with clay before. I looked at some tips on how to handle clay and watched some tutorials of how other people make sculptures.

I finally tried to play around with some clay which was a lot harder than I was expecting. I had to make sure that the clay wasn't getting dirty and it was very fiddly. After experimenting with the clay i'm not sure if I will use it for the final thing.
Card
Next I started looking at how I could use cardboard for my final design. I actually think I will use this idea as it can be used for a lot of my ideas.

Below I attempted to make a simple and easy rocket out of card and paper after watching one of the videos above.
Paper Mache
I decided to look at paper mache as I believe this method could be useful if decided to create an astronaut helmet.

I decided to attempt paper Mache using a balloon. I think if I were to do it again I would use thicker paper.
Projector
I wanted to look at ways I could create a space background and change the lighting and mood so I played around with my projector and looked at different space backgrounds. Below I linked some of the videos I used. I'm not sure I really like the thought of using these spaced themed backgrounds as I feel like it might distract people from the actual 3d object as the object ends up just blending in with the background.

Visuals
After finishing my visuals I decided to pick my favourite 6 and tried to think of how I could make the designs 3d using the methods I have been researching.
I decided that I wanted to go with design 65 as I feel like this design fits with how the movie impacted me the most. The broken helmet shows the sacrifices the crew made and the rocket going towards the earth represents the plot of the movie.
Trials and development
First I started using the paper Mache to try and create the earth. I think I might end up redoing this as I think I made the earth too big.
I started to think about shapes since I would have to make my space helmet out of cardboard. I felt like the dodecahedron or the icosahedron would be best for structure. I decided to make small 3d paper models of the shapes and I ended up liking the icosahedron the best. I then made the a bigger size and started cutting out cardboard triangles so I can build the space helmet.

For the 3d space rocket I have looked on YouTube for tutorials on how to make one.

I tried to create the helmet using cardboard with the shape above. However, I ended up hating the final result. I don't think it looked like a helmet at all.
So I decided to make the helmet using paper mache and a balloon and ended up preferring this result.
Now that I had finished the helmet I had to start working on the rocket. I was originally going to use cardboard but then I had the idea of using lego instead.
I decided to use double sided tape and paper for the title as I didn't want the text to disappear in the black background.
Here were some photos I took to start editing the final poster. I used my projector for lighting and used a space themed background.
Final
Although we are only allowed to use photoshop for small adjustments I still wanted to see what I could do with the poster using some bigger adjustments. The final poster has only a small amount of adjustments compared to the others.
