Book research
Since the brand we are creating Is fighting to protect nature I wanted to look for ways design can be more sustainable so decided to take some books out of the library to see how other designers have been more green.
Substitues to help environment
- Paper
|
While doing research I found a company who made paper from elephant dung. The paper is 75% 'Ellie poo' and 25% recycled. This is a great substitute which could be used to stop us cutting down forests.
|
Seed paper is another great substitute of normal paper as it is made with discarded cotton fibres which means no trees were felled. Also, the seeds honey flowers which will be good for bees and other pollinating insects
|
- Plastic
|
One of the substitutes of plastic I found was bamboo. the Company above creates home accessories out of bamboo which helps sustainable living.
|
Cotton is a great way to avoid using plastic when creating bags. Many students love tot bags which is great way to live sustainable.

Pinterest
I created a Pinterest board with pins I felt were related to our brand a bit like a mood board.
Colour pallets
First I started to look at nature themed colour palettes as this is what you would tend to expect to get from sustainable brands as most of the products are natural.
However, although the nature themed colour palettes were nice we wanted to look at some colours which were more eye catching and fun which will make students want to engage and live sustainably.
Looking at typefaces
At first I started looking at the typeface voyage however, I felt like this didn't fit the brand very well as the audience is for students aged 18-25 and it didn't really fit that audience as it looks like a typeface which would be used for a more expensive elegant brand. I did however love the 'O' as it was very round.
I then started looking at the typeface Avant garde gothic. This typeface went a lot better with our brand and again I loved the shape of the 'o' on the fonts which weren't condensed.
I then looked at the typeface Avenir which I started to prefer as I felt like the 'u' would go well with one of the ideas I wanted to develop.
Our audience
Brand goal - Encourage students to use more sustainable products to prevent the felling of trees which is causing the decrease in biodiversity.
Solution - To Educate and encourage students to live more sustainably by selling eco-friendly and biodegradable stationary products.
Brand Values - Eco-friendly, Education, Awareness

Development
First I started to develop one of Hannah's ideas of using an arrow on the U. I started trying it on the typeface Avenir.
I then started looking at the typeface Helvetica.
I then used some of the colour palettes above but wasn't sure how I felt about the look of it.
I then developed this idea bit more with the idea of having some of the species going extinct on the other side of the arrow. I like the idea of having different icons for the logo because it will be nice for the customers of the product to choose which icon suits their personality or choose one they want to support. This idea also helps show what our brand is supporting. However, I feel like this idea makes the logo look very childish and it kinda looks like we are saying we need to recycle the animals.
I decided to get rid of the arrow to see if it was necessary or not. However I felt like this just made it look like a backwards 'J'
I then tried this idea with different colour palettes.
I went back to the typeface voyage to see if the icon would make it look less fancy and expensive however I wasn't very keen on the results.
I also tried this idea but with the mushroom the same colour as the type.
I tried this typeface with a thicker font as Steph said she preferred a thicker 'u' as it looked more like a mushroom.
I wanted to do some experimenting with a leaf as I felt this link with our brand a lot more than mushrooms.
I quite liked the idea of the leaf on the 'k' so I tried it out in some colours. However, I was worried about how this logo would look at a small scale.
I wanted to develop another one of my ideas which was inspired by the origin of the name. I played about with the red circle symbol in the Japanese flag and turned it into the shape of an 'u'. Then added a black bamboo vector. However, I'm not sure if this looks too Japanese style instead of biodiversity.
I wanted to see this idea in colour to see if it was still affective not in red and black.
I decided to see this idea but with different typefaces. I really liked the bottom right one using the typeface 'Abolition'.
I wanted to go and try and develop another one of my ideas. I liked this one because it had more of a modern feel to it.
In this logo I hid the word ukiyo in the body of the panda.
Because its hard to actually spot the word ukiyo in the logo I wanted to make sure it was an image and a type logo so I started to look at different typefaces. I tried the typeface 'Voyage' since we looked at that one with our other typefaces however, I felt like it was too elegant for the logo and decided it definitely needed a sans serif typeface. My favourite ones were the 'Helvetica neue' especially the ones which match the stroke of the panda logo.
I started to think about if I wanted an uppercase logo or a logo with an uppercase 'U' however, I preferred the logo with lowercase.
I then had a quick play with colour.
After showing my group they gave me some very useful suggestions such as changing the eye to look more like a panda and making the ears bigger. I ended up preferring the logo with their suggestions!
Before
After
After feedback we decided we still needed to work on our logo as we felt it didn't look much like a panda. We also decided to play with the width of the font again.
We decided to play with the shapes of the eye and the nose of the panda and got a much better result.
We tried to change the shape of the ear on the panda however we decided to stay with the circle shape as we liked how it was abstract and not too realistic.
Finished logo
What colour palette suits our brand?
Products
Tote bags
At first I thought it would be cute to just have a patterned tote bag however I really wanted to still include the education part of our brand so I decided to make some tote bags with some motivational sentences to show the students they are doing a good thing.
Pens
We wanted to create pens which had facts on so while the students are using sustainable bamboo pens they are also learning about biodiversity and learning why it is important to be more sustainable.
Bottles
Again we thought it would be a good idea to put facts on the water bottles too! This can also spread awareness to other people who see the water bottle.
Toothbrushes
Crewnecks
Shopping tags
When selling our products in university shops they will be packaged with a sustainable tag made with seed paper. Below I designed a mock up to show what it would look like. The front shows how to plant the seed paper using vector images and the back includes a fact to educate students on biodiversity.
Ukiyo Instagram
We decided that because most of our target audience spends their time on social media it would be best to reach out to them on popular platforms. Below is a mockup of how we would use our colour scheme and logo to post on Instagram.
Instagram post ideas
I decided to create some instagram posts which would educate the students on biodiversity.
University booth
Our target audience is students so we thought the best place to educate and let students know about our brand is at welcome event such as freshers. Therefore I decided to design this booth where we will give out freebies of our bamboo products so students have an idea of what our brand does.
Website mockup
Our brand will be selling our products at university shops and online so I created a mock up website to show what the website they buy the products from would look like.
Brand visual toolkit
Since we had decided on a logo I thought it would be best to create a Brand visual toolkit.
