For this book I started focusing on designs using a magnifying glass. below I started making some mock up ideas however I want to try and recreate these using collage.
I wanted to try this idea out but with collage.
I took some of my favourite collages and edited them on photoshop. I wasn't really a fan of the two below as I thought they looked too edited and it lost its handmade feel.
I wanted to do a mock up of what it would look like all around the cover and I realised there wasn't much space to put the title on the spine so I still need to work on this idea.
To make this book more like a series I added a tie icon on the spine which will change for each book. I also added a 1 on the front to indicate its the first book.
I wanted to play with the position of the penguin logo as I didn't like the place it was positioned in the actual template.
Diary of a young naturalist
Since this book is a non-fiction I wanted to create something more real. Therefore, I decided to get some pressed flowers to help come up with a design for the book. I wanted to do this as the book is a diary and it made me think of when people book press flowers to look back on memories in their diaries.
With some of the pressed flowers I had I created some collages with the author of the books photo.
I then took my favourite out of these and played around with them on photoshop.
I then started thinking of how I would present the title.
I wanted to have an idea of what my book cover would end looking like so I did a quick little mock up. I still need to try and decide how I would want the authors name to go on the front.
I preferred the idea of having the collage go across the page so I decided to try this idea out. I definitely prefer the colours and how this design looks more natural however due to the placement of the plants I am struggling to find a way to put text on the spine.

Experimenting
First I wanted to start exploring one of my more simpler thumbnails.
I started by playing around with the colours of the dots. The circles are suppose to represent females and the 12 coloured ones are there to represent the women in the book.
I then started to think about what typeface I wanted to use.
Next was to add the authors name. I decided to play with hierarchy for this and played around with colour.
I wanted to try another one of my ideas. I started off by playing around with the silhouette of a woman.
After I got a basic shape that I liked I started to play around with the colour.
I wanted really a fan of the type at this stage so I decided to have a play and change that.
I started to play around with this idea of silhouettes more. I had a look at different textures, shapes and different colours to see which worked best with this design.
I then used this silhouette to create a better cover. I added a Nigerian pattern onto the book to link with the background the women come from.
I didn't really love any of these so I tried some different variations.
I wanted to try this idea but with my collages as the background instead.
Collaging
I really enjoyed experimenting with collage so I decided to experiment with the book in mind to see what sort of ideas I could come up with.
I used these ideas thinking about using the collage to go right across the book spread.
I made a little mock up of what I think the book cover will eventually look like however I need to still look at typography choices and made sure the images are edited to the best quality.
