I decided to do some research on materials I could store my products in before I did thumbnails to give me and idea os what I can produce while following the brand values of being sustainable.

Glass is 100% recycable and there are no limits to how many times you can recycle glass. Making new glass bottles with recycled glass can help lower the carbon footprint your business is responsible for. This is because a lower amount of energy is needed when compared with the energy that is needed creating a new bottle.

PET plastic is one of the most commonly recycled polymers. Being recyclable means that once a plastic container has been used it can be sent to the recycling centre to be sorted and shredded into “recyclate”. This recyclate can then be moulded into a new container. It saves the plastic from being disposed of in landfill where it will take many years to decompose.

Goat milk
I wanted to make sure that I had done research on the product I was selling before starting any thumbnails. I was actually surprised when I found out that goat milk is the most common consumed dairy as I thought it was cow milk!
I found out that Cleopatra use to actually bathe in milk to help reduce wrinkles as milk has so many skin benefits

Goats
To help me make design choices I wanted to look at the different types of goats to give me inspiration for my final design. I mainly focused on nanny goats as I want my product to focus on the health benefits and I think the word nanny really fits with idea as a nanny usually cares for a person.
- There are two types of goats domestic goats and mountain goats
- Goat pupils are rectangle
- More people consume goat milk than the milk from any other animal.
- Mountain goats have bright white coats that help them blend into the snowy areas of their home ranges. Domestic goats have coats that are yellow, chocolate or black.
- Goats were one of the first domesticated animals and were first domesticated around 9,000 years ago

Since my brand is focusing on the healthy side of goat milk I thought it would be important to research why goat milk is healthy by looking at the chemistry since my brand is quite scientific. I found some graphs which compare goat milk to cow milk and also looked at the chemical qualities of goat milk.
Lowers cholesterol
I found out that goat milk lowers cholesterol so I did some more research on this and why it is important.
- Cholesterol is a waxy substance found in the blood
- We need cholesterol to build healthy cells
- Too much cholesterol can block your blood vessels. It makes you more likely to have heart problems or a stroke.
- You can lower your cholesterol by eating healthily and getting more exercise. Some people also need to take medicine.

Above I have included some existing brands who also have the benefits of lowering chloesterol and how they've included this in the design of their packaging.
Why is goat milk good for skin?
My mum has psoriasis and always goes on about how much she loves goat milk so I decided to do some research on why its so good for your skin.
- Goat milk has the same pH as human skin. So, when you cleanse with a goat milk product, you do not disturb the acid mantle, or the skin’s natural microbiome
- Lactic acid works like a magnet to attract and retain moisture in the skin. That means goat milk skin care products can deliver a smoother, brighter, more hydrated complexion.
- AHA is in goat milk and it is known for its gentle hydration and exfoliation properties.
- Goat milk contains fatty acids which help repair the skin barrier

Typeface
I started looking at some typefaces which would suit my brand. Looking at scientific packaging I noticed a lot of them were sans serif and bold. I also looked at some geometric typefaces as I felt this also fit the brand.

Lowering cholesterol symbol
I wanted to use the chemical symbol of cholesterol on my design as one of the health benefits of goat milk is that it lowers cholesterol. I also loved the shapes in the symbol and felt it looked quite contemporary. I started with just playing around with where the symbol was placed on the bottle before looking at typography.

I wanted to see the symbol without a thick black outline so I tried it with a thinner line which I felt looked much better with the text.

I then added pops of colour to the bottles just to make them look a tad bit more interesting as I wasn't really a fan of just black and white. I think the blue and red looked the best as it gave more of a scientific feel to it.
I wanted to see if I preferred this idea on a carton so I got a mock up of a carton and started trying out more designs and ideas. The design needs a lot more work on it as its quite simplistic at the moment however, whenever I look at the symbol I think of honey so I'm not sure if the design is working the way I want it at the moment.

I wasn't sure if you could tell it was a chemical formula with the current vector so I added the symbols instead of the balls to see if it would look more scientific and less honeycomb.
I decided to develop this idea more with the feedback I was given during tutorials. We talked about how we preferred the most abstract formula. So, I decided to go back to the glass bottles.

Heart line
I wanted to do a heart line to show that the goat milk is healthy for you. I added a goat onto the line to link it back to the goats so it wasn't too scientific.

Again I wanted to see how this design would look on a carton to see which material I think the design suits best.

I then started to experiment with the placement of the line.
|
|
I started to play around with this idea more by making it more chaotic however I feel like this idea drifts away from what the packaging is trying to get across. This gives me heart attack vibes not healthy heart.
X-ray goat
I wanted to try an idea of showing a goats heart to show it gives you better heart health however, so far I feel like the design looks too dinosaur like. I tried it in blue instead of black and white however I found the text hard to read and I didn't like how it was looking so I decided to scrap this idea.

Scientist goat
Since my brand focuses on the science part of why goat milk is healthy I thought about creating a goat scientist mascot. I created this scientist goat using collage images and making them into a vector.

Patterns
When I was looking at scientific book design I came across some patterned designs which I really liked so I decided to create my own. I added goat feet and hearts to show it is good for your heart
I wanted to develop this patterned idea as it was one of my favourites. I started by adding some text to show the audience that this milk lowers cholesterol as just the hearts doesn't give away the message. I decided to use a pun " Herd to lower cholesterol" However this might change in the future.

I wanted to see this design on a glass bottle before I continued the idea. I tried it with both a cork lid and a metal. However I still think I am leaning towards a carton.
I wanted to try and include more goat in this design so I got this vector which looked similar to the shape of a heart and tried different ways of inserting it into the design.
Above I started placing the goats in with the hearts. However, I found it hard recognising the shape as a goat when I looked at the carton from far away and instead It looked more like a spider (but that could just be my bad eyesight)

I tried this idea again however I still didn't think it looked right due to the shape of the actual vector of the goat.
Since I wasn't keen on the heart shaped goat I decided to experiment with some other icons. Below is the first icon I experimented with. I preferred the design when the goats weren't in the navy but in the other colours this made them stand out more.

I then decided to try out some designs with the other standing up goat. I think this vector was a lot more easy to tell it was a goat. I tried this as a pattern and just a large goat in the centre. I personally prefer the patterned one
I then tried the goat face vector however I wasn't a fan of this one. It didn't really fit with the design in my opinion.
Out of all the attempts I did I liked the standing goat one the best so I decided to develop it more. First I needed to decide if all the other sides would include the goats too or if they would just be hearts.

I tried these designs in different colours to see what the design would look like on different products such as skimmed milk.
At first I did the design in just one colour but then after experimenting I really liked keeping the blue and combining it with other colours.

During my feedback I was told that this mock up looked too buttery to be a cheese packaging so I decided to go and try make my packaging for cheese look more like cheese packaging. I couldn't find any mockups which were like the one we talked about in my feedback session so I took a pasta mockup and edited it so that through the gap you could see cheese instead of pasta.

After getting feedback we talked about making the type more justified as it looked like it had a bite in the type.
