Before looking at materials I had a go at making my own typeface through hand. I tried to create the alphabet with an image of a virus in mind. I made them look quite bug like however, I feel like the final result reminds me more of the spikes on cacti.

Fingerprint
Since some virus' can spread through touch I decided to create a typeface similar to a fingerprint on illustrator.

Pills
I had an idea of using pills to make a typeface. This would make an interesting typeface and it fits well with the word virus as they are what cure viruses. I took this idea onto illustrator to have a play.

sustainable type
I thought of a more sustainable material I could use which is the packaging the medication comes in. I liked the idea of taking something old which no longer has any use and then using its colour and texture to create something more interesting. I experimented with making the word virus by cutting out the card.
Other materials
There were other materials that came to mind while thinking of the word virus such as, Glass, plastic, foil, cotton and even liquids such as water and hand sanitiser.
Typography
I decided to look at sans typefaces because when I think of the word virus I think of it in a medical way and when you look at packaging for pills and tablets the typography needs to be clean and readable which is why I think sans is the perfect choice.

I have taken photos of things which I feel resonate with the word virus.
Photo inspiration from online
I decided to look at images online which reminded me of the word virus.. below I have put a link to a Pinterest board which Ihave used to collect some images linking to the word.
Task 3
Colour schemes
I wanted to create some colour scenes from some of the photos I collected which I felt connected with the word virus.

I then started to create some colour palettes from photos I found online that remind me of the word virus.

After using photos for creating colour palettes I decided to have a play at creating my own.

Textures
I started by looking at the textures of plants as the spikes made me think of the spikes on a virus.

I started thinking about brail as it is seen on many tablet packaging.
|
|
Another texture I thought about was our fingertips. Some virus' spread by touch so I thought this would be an interesting texture to look at. I used some ink and created my own fingertip prints.

Cotton was another texture I thought about. As it can be used to heal someone which I felt linked to my word. Again I used some ink to get a better look at the texture.

Plastic was another texture I wanted to look at. I tried to use ink to show the creases when yous crumple it however this didn't work the way I wanted. I did prefer the look of it when I scanned it on the printer.

I had a clay pot with ridges on which had an interesting texture.
Another texture that I looked at was card. It is used for a lot of packaging so I thought it fit well with the word virus.

Foil was another material I looked at for its texture. I liked how it was shiny and had creases folded into it.
So far I had only looked at solid textures so I decided to look at some liquids. I decided to look at ink and hand sanitiser. Hand sanitiser was more thick and sticky compared to the ink.

I also decided to look at the texture of wood as there were so many patterns which reminded me on the patterns on our skin.

I looked at the textures of rocks as they all had interesting patterns due to some of them being eroded in the sea.

Photoshop experiment
I took this collage and played around with the colour just to experiment and see which felt most connected to the word virus.
With this collage I wanted to experiment with some effects and even used another one of my photos I took previously to mix the two definitions of virus.
This image wasn't showing much of a link to virus on its own so I decided to play around with the colour and composition on photoshop. I zoomed in on the leaf to show the detail as it was much more interesting.
This pine branch reminded me of the shape of a virus so I decided to play around with colour to see if I could try and make it look less like a pine branch and more like a virus.
With this image I wanted to play around with overlaying. I used two photos which I had taken and tried to make something interesting with them. I then played around with the colour.
I used one of the collages from before to try and come up with other ideas. I played around with the colour as I didn't think the orange was very connected to the word virus and then I had a play with overlaying other images to create a hacked effect.
