To start off my research I decided to look at ways to bind my monograph as I think this will help guide me through the rest of the process.

Virus topic
I wanted to have an idea of what was going to be written in the monograph so that I could plan my pages better. The brief says to use a minimum of 1000 words so I decided to have a look at some articles. I wanted my monograph to be based on coronavirus since it is a recent event.
Books
I had a look at some books from the library at Japanese graphic design and typography. Here are some things that caught my eye.
Anaglyph effect
I wanted to push myself with this project and do something I haven't tried before. therefore I had an idea of making my monograph 3d. This would include me having to create some 3d glasses and finding a way to store these in the monograph.
What is it?
Anaglyph is a stereoscopic photography effect that creates 3 dimensional images. It is made by overlapping two images one with a red filter and a cyan filter. The paper glasses tend to have a red lens for the left eye and a blue-green lens for the right eye.

With this technique I was thinking of how I could use this to show a healthy person compared to an unhealthy person.
Collage
Another idea I had for this monograph was using collage. I had done some experiments with collage so I could try and take those further and create something better for the monograph. I decided to do some research first.

Experiment/development
Anaglyph type trial
I used two words one which is linked to the word virus and one which is the opposite.
I started playing with textures and photographs to see if I could still get the effect to work.
I had to try and figure out to make sure that b both images came through clear when looking through the glasses. This meant I had to print of a lot of copies before getting the perfect one.
I then started to try it with other images
I really struggled to get this image to work with the snake.
Statistics
I decided to use some statistics and graphs to create an interesting pattern. I did deaths compared to births using a graph and colours.

Type
I started playing around with type for my monograph. I really liked the textures used for the photos so for titles and headers I experimented with those textures. Personally I found the 3D type a bit too much. I didn't want people to get a headache while reading the actual text so I decided to leave the 3d effects for decoration.
I wanted to experiment by using my own messy handwriting just as everything was just looking a bit too perfect which I didn't like because a virus isn't a perfect thing.
Below are a few ideas I have played around with. I have tried different type, colour and layout.
