Font selfie
For this task we had to choose a typeface and letter and then decorate it to show our own personality. I decided to use the typeface Kewl script and the letters S and K.
For the First font selfie (on the left) I did it based on one of my favourite songs Butterfly - BTS and for the second (on the right) I did it based of one of my favourite movies Spirited away.

A typeface is the design of the actual lettering for example, Myriad pro, Ariel, Helvetica ect. Whereas a font is the variations of a typeface such as, bold, italic, light ect.

The article above is about the 10 commandments of type and it explains some of the rules of typography.
Do not trust the software's judgement and take your time to look at the spacing between letters as it can ruin your design. You should also never overuse scrip fonts as they are unnecessary for most jobs. Another rule I have learnt from the article is to never place your type over a busy background as the background overpowers and instead you should put the type in a block of colour or crop the photo differently. Too many fonts can confuse or distract people from a message so it's best to keep them to a minimum (no more than three). Faking small caps is ugly and you shouldn't fake italics as it leaves the curves distorted and the stroke weight ends up out of sync. It's also important to not use all caps as it is a challenge to read. You should also avoid using white text on a dark background to make it easier to read however, there are times you can use white text on a dark background when you are trying to highlight a particular element. Also, by combining serifs it throws the hierarchy out of balance so use sans for a body when using a serif for a title. Finally one of the rules was that you should not use long measures. If it is too long or too short it can be very distracting and hard to read. The 11th Commandment was to not use Comic Sans.

Ampersand
1. collate eight different ampersands. Choose them because they are different from each other. Display them on your blog/website with a small write-up or commentary to accompany each different one that must include the typeface name and what attracted you to it. You might even want to find out a bit about its usage or history and add that to your commentary.

The photos to the right are the ampersands I chose 1. First I chose Manhattan this is probably my favourite out of all the ampersands because it is so interesting to look at I love how the designer of this typeface used really thin strokes with really thick strokes. 2. I also chose Port Vintage. I love this design so much I feel like it looks expensive and again it has a mixture of fine strokes and thick strokes which I really like. 3. I chose Caslon No 337 Italic because I loved the flowing swooshes and strokes it has. 4. I love this typeface Lust and I personally think it's a very sexy typeface 5. I was attracted to Brenta Bold italic because I love how the serif is presented. 6. My Darling is one of the typefaces that just makes me happy when I look at it. I I love how it doesn't include any straight lines and it makes me thing of smiles. 7. I was attracted to Model 4F because it was so different to all of the other ampersands I have seen. 8. Finally I chose Chino Display because I love how it uses such a thick brush. I also noticed it used the ‘et’ style ampersand. |

I chose the themes pets, Christmas and bathroom and used the typeface Baskerville Bold for Christmas and Futura for pets and bathroom. For the pets theme I decided to attempt painting a fish with watercolour. For the Christmas theme I used a scalpel to cut out holes and patterns to make the ampersand look similar to a snowflake. Finally for bathroom I used paint and bubbles to create a bubble effect to make it look like a bubble bath.

2. Pick two letters or numbers or a mix. Create nine 7cm-7cm compositions where you can combine the two characters in a dynamic way within the square. Explore scale, repetition and rotation within the composition but do not stretch/squish or distort the original type form. Each design should employ two unique typefaces and be made of single vector form. If you know how to use the pathfinder tool to cut the overlapping shapes out, then please do this, otherwise just overlap in black and white.
